Microcrystalloscopy

Microcrystalloscopy belongs to old methods of analytical chemistry. It does not mean the method is of low efficiency, at the contrary because we are able to visualize the true behavior of atoms submitted to chemical stress.
What you need to do the job is :

  • A good stereomicroscope x20 - x160 with zoom if possible.
  • needles
  • glass
  • chemicals
  • device to take pictures
  • You will not spend a lot of money, except for the device to take pictures. The photo above has been taken with a Canon Power Shot 350. A tiny piece of CsCl in the solution under testing gives after evaporation the red crystals.

Bismuth reaction with KI + CsCl

      - One drop of test solution in HCl 1/10
      - One crystal of Potassium Iodide.
      - One crystal of CsCl.
      - Red hexagons.
      - Picture is with transmitted light.
      - Some interferences : confirm Bi with Thiourea spot test.

      Mercury reaction with KI

      - One drop of test solution in HNO3 1/10
      - One crystal of Potassium Iodide.

      - Red Rhombs.
      - Picture is with transmitted light.
