Spectroscopy


Spectroscopy is a very useful tool to identify elements but it requires an elaborated device : prism or spectroscope and excitation source. High resolution can be achieved by large gratings.
An interesting site to know is Spectra of Gas Discharges, the author has created a Java program that reads a file containing a list of emission line wavelengths and their corresponding strengths then simulates the appearance of the spectrum in a good visual spectroscope. You may write the files coresponding to elements not given in the site and get the spectra you should obtain with the spectroscope. The Handbook of Chemistry and Physics is the source of accepted emission lines for elements. Examples of spectra are given below :
